Waiting on...a dining room makeover

As promised, today is my waiting on...dining room makeover post.  Unfortunately, this will not be a glamorous before/after reveal.  Instead, it will be the nitty gritty current state of affairs of our "dining" room sprinkled with my hopes (and dreams!) of what I would like it to be!

We moved into this house 7+ years ago.  When we bought the house, we used everything we had to get into the house with not much left over for renovations.  So, little by little (and at a snail's pace!), we've made this house our home.  The kids' spaces upstairs have all been repainted top to bottom and personal details to each room have been added.  But, we've never gotten around to sprucing up the downstairs.  Let me give you a little tour.

Here is the view of our home as you walk in the front door:
There is an office to the left and what's suppose to be a dining room to the right.
So, let's talk about the obvious.  Why don't we use this room as a dining room?  First and foremost, we are not fancy.  We are more of the paper plate, eat standing around the kitchen island while watching football on tv type of family.  Not to mention that the closest family we have lives three hours away and holidays are never spent in our home.  So...what is the current use of this room?  Well, it's more like a storage room.  Let's see, I put items to be donated/Craigslisted in this room, we keep extra school/art supplies in this room, an armoire that wouldn't fit into our bedroom made it's home here, an uncompleted closet reno is in the corner, and storage/filing boxes are currently living here.  The kids also like to play "ball-y ball" in here!

Big question - what do I envision this space to be?!  I would LOVE to convert this space into a kid's living/study space!  Why do I want this?!  First off, I'm really sick and tired of our kitchen table looking like this (I find it ironic that the chalkboard saying I wrote for last week says "Never give up.  Great things take time.").!  Unfortunately, this is the only space in the house that the kiddos can spread out to do their homework.  But, it's just not working for my sanity!
Second, and though it's hard to admit, our bigs will be dating in a few years and will (hopefully!) want to hang out at our house.  We have a playroom upstairs with a TV but there is NO WAY that will be the hangout room!  So that leaves our living room.  If our situation remains the same, Mike and I would be banished to our room.  BUT, if we had a kid's living space, Hope could play upstairs, Mike and I could hang out in the living room, and the bigs could hang out in the front living space.  Sounds awesome, right?!  So, here's some of the ideas that I have floating around in my head for this space.

add built-ins to the far wall - space for Aggie memorabilia, gaming devices, movies, art/school supplies, etc.

add a long table behind a couch for homework and additional seating when friends are over and a chalkboard game table for in front of the couch

And, since I'm dreaming, I would LOVE to add a reading nook in the corner!

So, what do you think?  I would love to hear your ideas, inspirations, or comments while I wait... :)

Gig 'em and God bless!

  1. Love the built guys totally need to do this! The table behind the sofa is a really functional idea too...would make a great place to layout snacks when they have their friends over too.

    1. I know, right?! That space just looks like it was meant to be a kids living/study space! I'm hoping this happens soon!!! And, I'm thinking that Mike could build the table behind the couch - you know, in all his spare time! :) But, he likes doing that sort of thing! I've got my eye on a Craigslist table to re-do for the game table. Just need them to come off their price a bit!

  2. We have been in our house since May 2007, so that makes 7+ years. We haven't done many renovations for the exact same reason, because our house was at the top of our budget. It is slowly but surely (sometimes feels like forever) turning into the home that I want it to be. I stay at home, so we don't have a lot of extra money. I tell myself that I'd rather have this time with my girls than house updates. Sacrifices have to be made in any situation. However, after we add a mini-van, we're going to save to update our flooring.

I LOVE your forward thinking! My hubby and I want our house to be the hang out place to keep an eye on who our girls are with and what they're doing. Considering the oldest is 3.5, we've got some time. :) The table behind the couch is one of the best ideas I've ever heard of! What would we do without Pinterest? That's where I get my ideas.

Oh, and I used to knit. I'm too much of a perfectionist, so I quit. I'm glad you found your gift. I bet it's so fulfilling, especially when you know who you're making something for.

Have a great weekend! Sorry about the longest comment EVER! I just feel like we have a lot in common, so I got excited! haha :)

    1. Hi, Jessica! Thanks for your comment! Don't you just love Pinterest?! But I do get frustrated sometimes and think "seriously, why didn't I think of that" :) I tried knitting but found it much more difficult than crocheting. I'm a perfectionist too and it's hard when I see little details that I would like to try and improve. I have to remind myself that it's handmade and therefore, not perfect. I hope you have a great weekend and thanks again for reading!

  3. Good thing you know someone who can help make this a reality! 😉

    1. True! Now just if those AC guys wouldn't have shown up today to replace both units. :/

I love when you leave comments! So...what are you waiting for?! :)
