Friday Favorites - hubby, hobby, hot deals, and a hot mess!

Like I mentioned last week, January continues to beat me up!  I have about a bajillion projects/things to do that are half done with no end in sight.  Please tell me I'm not the only one!  Thank goodness for three day weekends!!!  I hope you have something fun planned!

Like always, my Friday posts are one of my most FAVORITE to put together!  In all the craziness, it's fun to look back over the week and remember some of my FAVORITE things!

FAVORITE night - date night!

One of my January goals was to schedule more date nights.  Because I'm a girl, I like to be wanted and tend to leave date nights up to Mike.  But after working all week, my sweet man just wants to relax.  Add in the facts that we don't have family near and finding a babysitter in a college town before classes resume is a near impossibility and you've got a family of five hanging out ordering pizza and watching tv on a Saturday night (not that there is anything wrong with that!).  My dear sweet friend, Melissa, got me thinking recently.  She said, "Always take the initiative.  Always be the one that tries the hardest, that gives first, that pursues hardest…that loves the most."

So, I did just that!  My parents were in town for Aggie basketball and the game was at noon - guess what that meant?!  They could babysit our kiddos that evening!  I called and made reservations at Christopher's and we were set for our date night!!!

I would share with you the selfie we took, but trust me, #westinkattakingselfies!
This picture is way cuter! :)
my view at dinner - a roaring fire and my smokin' hot hubby looking over the wine list!
Can we say delicious?!  We always share the house filet.  #girlsgottosaveroomfordessert!  Here's how the menu describes it - center-cut beef tenderloin on creamed spinach and house potatoes topped with fried crawfish tails and bĂ©arnaise sauce on port wine demi glace
Here's how I describe it - YUM!
I had this laid out for us when we got home but we were too stuffed to enjoy any more food.  And, for the record, I stink at picking out movies!  We watched New Year's Eve and we both slept through the majority of it.  The Oscars definitely won't be asking for my opinion anytime soon!  :)

And here's my little PSA about date nights - Love the way you want to be loved.  I promise, you can't go wrong!  Click here for more ah-ha moments from Melissa about dating your hubby!

FAVORITE new hobbies

Holden got a sewing machine for Christmas and has been itching to get started.  I know absolutely nothing about sewing machines so I encouraged her to wait till someone could show her the correct way to use it.  JoAnn's to the rescue!  They offer all kinds of classes and we were super lucky to find out they were offering a Sewing Basics class this past Saturday.  It was a 2.5 hour class and she came home with tons of new knowledge about her sewing machine!
her first sewing project - a tissue holder!

I'm sure this weekend I'll find her at her sewing table (check out the before/after here!) working on something new.  Mike has pulled something in his neck and he was asking if we had a rice bag.  Unfortunately we don't but I found this on Pinterest and I'm pretty sure Holden can make one for him!

I am a huge lover of blankets!  They are definitely one of my FAVORITES!  I found these fabulous ones at Kroger (of all places!).  They are super duper soft and only $9.99!!! Someone please go get one and tell me how amazing they are so that I feel justified in buying one!  :)

FAVORITE finds - part 2

I LOVE Wal-Mart!  I know there are many out there that cringe at the thought of Wal-Mart but I don't mind it at all!  I find some of my most FAVORITE things there!  Here are two fun outfits that I put together for the girls this week with items from Wal-Mart!
Holden participated in UIL yesterday and needed to wear something nicer than school clothes.  This dress from Wal-Mart was perfect - and it was only $6.44!  REGULAR PRICE!!!  Polka dot headband, denim jacket, black tights, and combat boots and she was set!  Bonus that we already had all the add ons!
I LOVE for the kiddos to dress up for the holidays but since they only get to wear the outfits a handful of times, I don't want to break the bank.  I knew when I saw this heart tutu for only $4.97 that Ms. Hope would just have to have it!  I paired it with a Wal-Mart t-shirt from last year that says "Sorry boys, Dad says I can't date."  We already had the bow, leg warmers, and boots and I got the red and white striped sweater from Old Navy during the holidays.  Just checked and the sweater is marked down to $16.

Now don't get me wrong, I'm happy to splurge on outfits but I just can't pass up a good deal - especially when they just look so stinkin' cute!

Anyone that knows me knows that I suck at anything related to the kitchen!  And, I'm not saying that I don't LIKE to cook, I'm saying that I can NOT cook!  Thank goodness for Mike or my family would starve!

Last week, Andrea posted about her family's FAVORITE pasta.  Here's how she described it:

It's CRAZY easy and majorly delicious.  Gourmet? No.  Cheesy and amazing? Yes.

CRAZY easy?!   Not gourmet?  Sounds like something I might could do!!!  So, I headed to the grocery store and picked up all the ingredients.
My parents were coming to town and normally we would go out to dinner.  But, it was cold, rainy and #ididntwanttoputonmakeup.  I was feeling extra confident and said that I would make dinner.  ***REMIND ME TO NEVER DO THIS AGAIN!  :)

I prepared the pasta and took it to their house to cook.  And, Andrea was right.  It was CRAZY easy to prepare!  I popped it in the oven and sat back and waited for greatness. As her recipe said, 30 minutes went by and the buzzer sounded.  I popped up to go check on it and couldn't wait to taste the greatness.  Um...that would be a big.fat.NO!  While it smelled delicious, and the sauce was tasty, the noodles were crunchy.  What?!  So I quickly looked back over the recipe and there was one small detail that I neglected to do...  Yea, that!
So I did what anyone would do and quickly texted my best friend, Shelly.  We laughed and then my family went and picked up Chick-fil-A!
But, this doesn't end in complete failure (cause I'm taking the F word out of my vocabulary!)!  I left the pasta in the oven for another 30 minutes or so and the noodles finally cooked.  I ate the leftovers for lunch for a few days and like Andrea said, it really was majorly delicious!

There's no date night to look forward to this weekend but there's three birthday parties on the agenda.  I'm hoping to get my Valentine decorations out and the cherry on top would be some time for some fun crafts.  We'll see!  What do you have planned for this weekend?  Here's hoping it's filled with love and laughter!

Have a blessed weekend!  Gig 'em and God bless!

You can check my FAVORITE link-ups page to find the awesome girlies I'm linking up with today.  Show them some love! :)

  1. Hahahaha oh I love you! You didn't know you had to cook the pasta..... honey that is hilarious! Ok that's not the only reason I love you - um AMEN on the Walmart....I find so many cute outfits there. Those 6.97 dresses for little girls cannot be beat and if you pay close attention when you go to the mall THE SAME stuff is there (fabric, material, pattern, etc) for double the price. And tell your baby girl this 33 year old would LOVE to know how to sew so I'm a little jealous she's rockin' it out. Have a GREAT weekend. Its date night weekend for me and I'm taking initiative! xxBrownie

    1. Hi, Amanda! In my defense, the one thing I can cook is lasagna. When I cook it, I don't cook the noodles first - guess I thought that was the norm for all pasta! Haha! Guess not! I felt like such a goof ball! But, the pasta was really good - even after I screwed it up! Glad you love Wal-Mart too! I always browse through - just in case! I've even found a thing or two to add to my outfits there too! And to be honest, I'm hoping Holden teaches me how to use her machine! I have always wanted a machine but knew it would just sit there since I have no clue how to use it! This is definitely a hobby that I will be encouraging! Have a fabulous date night! You'll have to tell me all about your plans! Have a great weekend!

  2. While I love favorite part of this post is #1...totally love that you took the initiative to plan date night. M's post was so good! And dang it why don't I ever, ever find cute stuff at Walmart!! I seriously think you must go there on just the right day.

    1. Date night was fabulous and I'm already looking forward to next time! We had the BEST waiter (next time you are there, ask for Freddy!) that made our night even better! And, about Wal-Mart - I go in with no expectations. When I need to find something - nada - but when I'm not looking - tada! - greatness! It's a lot easier finding things for Hope but I was over the moon when I found the dress for Holden.

  3. Love the way you want to be loved- GREAT advice!! I was thinking about making Andrea's recipe this weekend... I will be sure to cook the pasta first!! LOL Hilarious! :)

    1. Have you had a chance to make Andrea's pasta yet? Hope yours turned out better than mine! :) Thanks for stopping by! Have a great rest of your weekend!

  4. Just caught up on reading all your posts!!! You're so funny girl! I don't cook much either, thank goodness for my husband! And my Walmart rarely carries anything good, but when they do I snatch it up! :)

    1. Thanks, friend! You are always so sweet to read my posts! I love your encouragement - thank you!!! I'm terrible in the kitchen! But, this makes me sound REALLY bad! I make an awesome lasagna (no, really, I do!) and the noodles I use for that don't have to be cooked before. This recipe was really similar so I didn't even think twice about dumping these noodles in. I definitely learned to read ALL the words in the recipe! :) But, yes, thank goodness for husbands!

I love when you leave comments! So...what are you waiting for?! :)
