Day Ten - love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth

1 Corinthians 13:4-7 gives us so many definitions of what love is and what love is not. Today is the eighth day that we have talked about what love is not.  Beginning tomorrow, we will (finally!) be back to the wonderful things of what love is!  I'm so glad you are joining me!
Day ten - love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.  Other translations say love doesn't revel [enjoy] when others grovel [fall to the ground] (The Message), love is never happy when others do wrong but is always happy with the truth (Easy-to-Read Version), and love does not celebrate injustice [lack of fairness] (The Voice).  The definitions in bold were Googled. :)

As I was thinking about this characteristic, karma came to mind.  You know when someone has done something really awful to you and then something happens to them and you think - uh huh, karma, baby!  Well, that is not love.  Like many of the other characteristics that we've seen so far, this one builds on yesterday.  If you can love without keeping a record of wrongs, loving without delighting in evil should be easy.  I think the best way to practice this type of love is encouragement.  Love gets excited when it sees a friend succeed.  Love pats someone on the back because you noticed the little things they were doing right.  Love says to the tired mom in the grocery store, "you are a great mom!".  Rejoice with the truth!  Let's see what else Scripture tells us about encouraging others:

if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead, do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully.
Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good.

Romans 12:7-9 (NIV)

For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope.
May the God who gives endurance and encouragement give you the same attitude of mind toward each other that Christ Jesus had, so that with one mind and one voice you may glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Romans 15:4-6 (NIV)

Finally, brothers and sisters, rejoice! Strive for full restoration, encourage one another, be of one mind, live in peace. And the God of love and peace will be with you.

2 Corinthians 13:11 (NIV)

Therefore if you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any common sharing in the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind. Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.

Philippians 2:1-4 (NIV)

But encourage one another daily, as long as it is called “Today,” so that none of you may be hardened by sin’s deceitfulness.
Hebrews 3:13 (NIV)

Can you tell I love the Philippians verse?!  :)  It was one of the kiddos verses from camp a few years ago and I have held on to it tightly since then!  It's made more than one appearance in the past few days!

We are definitely in the home stretch with our love challenge!  Tomorrow is love always protects!  I think we can agree that the next few days will be easier than the past few! Thanks for coming on this journey with me!  Hope to see you tomorrow!

  1. You are so right with describing this as a Karma situation. There have been plenty of times where I think "they had that coming to them" or "they got what they deserved." So unloving of me!

    1. I know, right?! Every day God is teaching me a lesson on "you thought you knew this but..." :) Love is hard! But, we can do hard things!

  2. Dill and I read this one together this morning!

  3. Thanks for linking up to Tuesday Talk! Love your encouraging words!

I love when you leave comments! So...what are you waiting for?! :)
