Day Three - love does not envy

Welcome back!  So, what did you think about the first two days?  We've seen the first couple of ways that the Bible describes what love is and for the next eight days, we'll look at how it tells us what love is NOT!  Buckle up - this is the part that convicted me the most!
Since the Bible is telling us what love is NOT, I thought I would check Google for a few antonyms of the word envy.  According to my fav search engine, the opposite of envy is friendly, comfort, confidence, contentedness, or kindness.  So, when we are not friendly, or do not provide comfort, are not confident, are not content, or are not kind, we are not showing love.

The Message translations tells us "love doesn't want what it doesn't have".  And the Easy-to-Read version says it simple, "love is not jealous."

Here are a couple more verses on what the Bible tells us about envy:

A heart at peace gives life to the body, but envy rots the bones.
Proverbs 14:30 (NIV)

And I saw that all toil and all achievement spring from one person’s envy of another. This too is meaningless, a chasing after the wind.
Ecclesiastes 4:4 (NIV)

Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other.
Galatians 5:26 (NIV)

For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice.
James 3:16 (NIV)

Therefore, rid yourselves of all malice and all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander of every kind.
1 Peter 2:1 (NIV)

We all fall short of loving like God wants us to every.single.day.  But, thankfully we serve a Savior who loves us more than we can imagine and there's that wonderful thing called grace!  And, maybe that's how we should approach loving without envy.  Let's give each other grace.  Let's celebrate with each other instead of being jealous of what someone else has.  Let's pat someone on the back instead of wishing it was us getting the praise. Let's just build each other up!  We are all hot messes in one way or another - nothing to be jealous about!  :)

  1. Yep....envy and patience have been my biggest challenges I think and envy would be the #1. I am sooooo much better than the younger me but it is still one of those areas where I have to have little discussions with myself. I love these additional verses....going to be making sure I jot those down.

    1. I'm being convicted every.single.day! But, I guess that's what God was trying to do - get my attention! :) I like looking up the additional verses. I love seeing how everything is intertwined! Glad you liked them too!

  3. Amen! Thank God for grace! You are so right again...we all have our issues!!! No one's life is perfect! My used to tell me when I was younger and feeling sorry for myself..."if everyone threw their cross to bare in a pile...I guarantee you'd pick yours back up." That has always stuck with me. I would be no happier with someone else's problems (and we all have some) and all of a sudden my problems don't seem so bad!

    1. That mom of yours is a wise woman! I love that saying - and it's, oh, so true!!! There is always, always, ALWAYS something to be thankful for! And, if we are having a hard time finding something, there is always grace!
