Friday Favorites - the dog days of summer

While I'm Waiting...the dog days of summer
We wrapped up the first week of summer and, well, the score is summer 1, me 0!  :)  Let's just say that there was no type of schedule, I completely forgot about a training session, naked is going to be the new black if I don't get laundry done, and my house is a complete disaster.  Good news - my kids couldn't be happier and haven't seemed to notice that their mom is a complete mess!  haha!  There's always next week!

But, regardless of everything that didn't happen this week, there were lots of things that have happened since last Friday that were definitely my FAVORITES!
the last day of school was my FAVORITE day!
If you follow me on Instagram, chances are you've seen most of these.  I was guilty of over-gramming the last day of school!  :)  I can't help it, the last day is my FAVORITE day of school!
I like to call this...a last day of school miracle!  I asked if they wanted to do a crazy pic and this is what they did.  Ah!  They actually look like they like each other!
first day/last day pics are my FAVORITE

Holden is my FAVORITE 4th grader.  She has come so far in her years at elementary school.  I can remember showing up for events and her leaving in tears - getting up in front of a crowd is just not her thing (but she's definitely overcoming that!).  I was so happy to see her smiling and waving at us!

 Last day of elementary school!
While I'm Waiting...last day of school garage sign
Remember when I gave you five ways to celebrate the last day of school?!  It's a tradition around here that I put a sign on the garage door - here's this year's sign!  And, don't you just love Hope's signature pose?!  :)

and it wouldn't be complete without a jumping pic!
We capped off a great day with a trip to the pool - this is where we will spend the majority of our summer!
Chick-fil-A milkshakes
Super random but Chick-fil-A milkshakes are definitely our FAVORITES!  Oh.my.goodness! So yummy!!!
cheers to summer!
Seamless Bible Study
This past Sunday, I joined Katy and a group of fabulous ladies for a new bible study called Seamless.  Maybe you've heard about it but if not, here's the description from the Lifeway website:

In seven sessions, Seamless covers the people, places and promises of the Bible, tying them together into the greater story of Scripture. Participants will gain an overarching understanding of the fundamental layout and meaning of God's Word. Seamless helps replace insecurity that holds participants back with clarity and helping them move forward with confidence in their understanding of Scripture. Each week of study features key information that ties all of scripture together into the seamless truth of the gospel message and is accompanied by maps, general Bible facts, and word studies.

Not gonna lie - bible studies can be hard!  They are intimidating, overwhelming, and rarely do I ever complete one but I'm hoping and praying this one will be different.  We are in the first week and so far so good!  If you are looking for a do-able bible study - check this one out!
I can't wait to get to know these ladies better!
Summer of Service
While I'm Waiting...Summer of Service
This past week, I kicked off the Summer of Service challenge and week 1 was all about serving our families.  As I mentioned above, this week kicked my booty and I missed many opportunities that I could have served my family better (like making sure everyone had clean clothes to wear and that my kitchen counters were cleaned off so that we could actually cook!) but, I did manage to do a couple of things!

Colby and I worked together to surprise the girls with a fun treat.  Guess you could say we combined surprise a kiddo with their favorite meal with create something together!  It turned out super cute and the girls LOVED it!
While I'm Waiting...jello treat
isn't this adorable?!  I take zero credit for the idea - I found the pinspiration here
While I'm Waiting...jello treat
We've only scratched the surface of our summer bucket list but Mike and I did get a babysitter to attend an event last night.  All in all - a good start to our summer (with definite room for improvement!). :)

Check back Monday to see the week 2 challenge! #soschallenge2015
Maggie Sunshine Rebecca
Last Wednesday evening, we had a family meeting to discuss getting a dog.  Actually, we told the kiddos that we would like to get a new dog but the time just wasn't right yet.  We wanted to wait a little bit longer but maybe in a few weeks.  Fast forward to the NEXT DAY around lunchtime...Mike calls me to say that he thinks he's found us a dog.  I thought he was joking (and I wasn't very excited!).  He tells me to check out the shelter's webpage and gives me the name of the dog.  I saw her picture and no bells and whistles went off for me.  I spent the next day and a half coming up with a million reasons why she wasn't our new dog.  And then Saturday morning rolls around and we go to meet her.  I see her walking towards us and I wanted to cry - there was no doubt that she was the one!

Mike and I went to meet her first.  We wanted to make sure she was a good fit before we let the kids meet her.  After we spent some time with her we couldn't wait to go get the kids.  We brought them back to the park and the rest, well, is history!  Introducing...Maggie Sunshine Rebecca!
the kids getting to meet her for the first time - sweet Maggie had no idea how much love was about to be shown to her!
this guy fell in love with her the instant he saw her picture on the shelter's website
she's pretty good on a leash and let all three kiddos take turns walking her
she's super easy with Hope which was a major concern for us
I think this was the moment that Maggie realized this might just turn out in her favor
she was home with us later that afternoon!
Maggie is uber laid back so the girls had to settle for watching her sleep
later that night I found the girls curled up by her bed
and the next day I found her sleeping with Colby - Maggie sleeps A LOT!
she quickly learned to navigate the stairs - on the second morning, I found her in Holden's room
I walked in one day this week to Hope telling her all about the garbage trucks!  We've taken so many pictures but this one just might be my FAVORITE!
Maggie was found at a little food mart down the road from the shelter.  We think she was dumped by a college kid that couldn't keep her anymore.  She is so, so, so smart and we feel like she was loved and cared for before she was abandoned.  She hasn't had an accident in the house and has started ringing a bell to let us know when she needs to go outside.  She isn't jumpy and she's very gentle when we give her a treat.  She's got a little eye issue (they referred to it as a "cherry eye") and we will take her in a few weeks to see how we can help her but, to us, she's just perfect.  We miss Kennedy so much but it feels good to have fur all over the carpet again!  Welcome to our family, Maggie!  We already love you so much!

I hope you've had a week filled with your FAVORITE people, places, and memories!

Have a fabulous weekend!  Gig 'em and God bless!

  1. Love the name of your new love! Let me guess, the kids each picked a name for her, couldn't decide so all three stuck? If so, love it! Your story made me choke up a bit because well, I am a sucker for a good "dog story." I gave you a shout out this week on Thankful Friday! Have a wonderful weekend and it melts my heart that you rescued a dog from the shelter! Our two little dogs are the loves of our lives!

    1. Her name actually kind of evolved into Maggie Sunshine Rebecca... I loved the named Maggie (wanted to name one of my kiddos that but no such luck). There were other names floating around too - Rudy, Isabella, and now I can't remember the rest. But, we all had to agree and (finally!) decided that this would be the perfect name. We added Sunshine because she was found at the Sunrise Food Mart and she literally is a ray of sunshine. And, finally Rebecca because that's Holden's middle name and everyone in our house has someone named after them except her so she adds it to the dogs' names. Mike and Colby share the middle name Daniel and Hope and I share the middle name of Christian. Holden was named after my grandmother but she's no longer living. So, we've had Kennedy Rebecca and now Maggie Sunshine Rebecca. :) Phew - long story - sorry! And, thank you for the shout out and helping to spread the word about the Summer of Service challenge! I greatly appreciate it! Hope you have a great day!

    1. I'm so glad Maggie is here too! And, you know how much I wanted it not to be her! I shudder to think if I would have said no - I would have an amazing dog go and with her eye issue and coming across as timid, I'm not sure she would have found a home. Isn't that treat adorable?! I had all the stuff to do it on the last day of school and, well, that didn't happen! Colby buttered me up this week when he asked me, "what Pinterest project are we going to do this week?" so he helped me when the girls went with Mike to get dog food! :)

  8. I'm a new reader of your blog. Your kids are adorable! As the founder of a rescue - THANK YOU so much for rescuing Maggie! She looks like the perfect addition to your family. Most of the time, cherry eye requires a quick operation, but I'll cross my fingers that it resolves on its own for you.

    1. Hi, Cole! I'm glad you found me! Thank you for your kind words! Bless you for founding a rescue! We'll never know why Maggie's owner let her go (she was found wearing a collar with tag rings - but no tags - the owners obviously removed them before the let her go) but I wish that I could let them know they raised her well and that I wish they didn't have to abandon her. She's such a sweet girl! She goes in for surgery later this month so hopefully all will go well. Thanks for stopping by! Hope to see you back again soon!

  11. Oh she's beautiful!! Just stumbled on your blog and I'm so glad to see you adopted this sweet dog. We had a yellow lab named Katie who looked so much like your Maggie. Katie was a stray that wandered up to our house one day and we could never find her owners. She was a wonderful, smart, very devoted dog. You'll love Maggie. :)
