Summer of Service - week 2: animals

While I'm Waiting...Summer of Service week 2: animals
Welcome back to the weekly Summer of Service challenge!  I've loved hearing from so many people that will be joining us on this journey!  I'm constantly reminded that the smallest acts can make the biggest difference!

Did you happen to miss week 1?  No worries!  You can check it out here.

This week's theme is:  animals.  Since this challenge is family-friendly, this is a week that kids will love to get involved with!  This past week, we adopted a puppy from our local shelter. We feel very fortunate to have added Maggie to our home and wanted to do something to give back to the shelter that took such good care of her.  I've put together a list of ideas that you and your kiddos can do to serve some of God's critters.

*recently updated after some awesome ideas came in from a few readers!*

*walk a neighbor's dog or offer to bathe it for them (make sure kiddos use soaps and shampoos that are safe for dogs)

*volunteer time at your local animal shelter - lots of dogs and cats just want someone to spend time with them - you could spend an hour playing games of fetch, walking a few dogs, or just walking around patting a few heads and talking to the animals

*make a monetary donation to your favorite animal rescue or shelter

*don't forget the employees that work at the shelter - many see things that none of us want to know about - consider taking them flowers or cupcakes just to say "thank you" for all you do for the animals

*collect donations and drop them off at your local rescue or shelter
most have wish lists on their website - some ideas include:
dog leashes, collars, harnesses, toys, dog and puppy shampoo, blankets, food and treats, sweaters (smaller short haired dogs get cold in the AC), "adopt me" vests or leash sleeves, and flea & tick meds

*older kiddos might enjoy making dog collars and giving them away (or they could sell them and donate the money)

*adopt a new furry family member and welcome them to your fur-ever family - I realize this one is not for everyone :)

*can't adopt?  maybe you and your family could foster a cat or dog till they are ready to go to their fur-ever home

*have photography or Photoshop skills?  donate your time to take pictures of shelter/rescue animals - good pictures can make a huge difference in helping animals get adopted

*share adoption profiles on social media - who knows, you just might help an animal find their new home!

I'm already looking forward to a couple of items on this list!  What about you?  Do you have other ways we could serve this week?

Join me on Instagram and tag your pictures with #soschallenge2015.  I would love to share what you guys are doing!  I love pulling inspiration from projects that others are working on so share, share, share!

I hope you'll join me!

  7. I love this and the positive impact that everyone will have on the lives of animals around them! Other fun ideas to make or donate (or purchase) are: harnesses, sweaters (smaller, short haired dogs get COLD in air conditioning!), "adopt me" vests or leash sleeves, people with photography/Photoshop skills can volunteer their time to take pictures of shelter/rescue dogs (I can't tell you how much a good picture can make in helping a dog get adopted) and most shelters and rescues really need flea & tick meds. :-)

  13. Great idea to teaching kids to service while also having fun! We are fur-ever family and if I ever win the lottery, the money goes to a local animal shelter. Thank you for linking up with Thursday Favorite Things and I hope you have a glorious day!

  14. I hit publish and realized my comment might sound as if I would only donate if I win the lottery. What I meant is, I play just for that purpose. I 'd love to see the shelter expand and improve and I do what I can to help. Just to be clear, lol. Hugs and see you next week here and there :)

  16. You've got some great 'animal' service ideas. I think my favorite is to think about those who work in an animal shelter and do something for them.

Thank you so much for sharing this at Grandma Ideas Sharing Time link party. It’s a great post! Thank you so much for sharing this at Grandma Ideas Sharing Time link party. (I've pinned it!)

    1. We took cookies to the shelter where we found Maggie. The girls working in the front office had tears in their eyes. They couldn't believe that we would come back and bring them gifts. It was a great example to my kiddos about showing appreciation to everyone. Thanks for hosting Grandma Ideas! Always a fun party!
