Summer of Service - week 9: the $1 challenge

While I'm Waiting...Summer of Service week 9: the $1 challenge
Welcome back to the weekly Summer of Service challenge!  This week our big kids are at camp so it's just Hope.  I had to really think about ways that she and I could serve together because she's so young.  But, just as I'm reminded time and time again, it doesn't matter how young or old you are, everyone can make a difference.  Last week's challenge was one that we've been working on for a few weeks and will continue as long as the sales are good!  We've got quite the stockpile of school supplies going and can't wait to deliver them to Holden and Colby's schools.
While I'm Waiting...Summer of Service week 8: school supplies
OfficeMax and Office Depot are running amazing penny and quarter sales!  So far we've been able to snag the following school supplies at these crazy cheap prices:
Sharpies - .25 each
pencil pouches - .01 each
3 pack of pink erasers - .01/package
pencil sharpeners - .25 each
colored pencils - .50 each
5 pack of highlights - .25/package
scissors - .25 each
4 pack of glue sticks - .25/package
10 pack of ball point pens - .01/package
package of index cards - .01/pack
4 oz. bottle of glue - .01 each
rulers - .01 each
protractors - .01 each
compass - .25 each
12 pack of pencils - .01/package

I love that my hubby will shop the sales with me!
While I'm Waiting...Summer of Service week 8: school supplies
Three packages of index cards, three bottles of glue, and three packages of ball point pens all for TEN CENTS!  These prices making donating school supplies super easy!

Were you able to join us and donate a few school supplies?  I would love to hear from you if you are serving alongside us this summer!

Let's Do Some Good Today had a fantastic post recently about serving with school supplies.  You can check it out here.

You can find previous challenges here - it's never too late to complete a challenge! :)
This week's challenge is a fun one!  Just as I was reminded that it doesn't matter how old you are, it also doesn't matter how much you give - only that you give!  I'm encouraging you this week to see how you can bless others with $1 (or less!).

Here's a couple of ideas to get your started (and some of these won't cost you anything!):

make something - I know lots of you guys are super talented crafters (and every kiddo is an artist!).  Why not make something and bless someone with your talents?!

* share - Have a few coupons that you aren't using?  Why not give them to someone else to use?

* make a wish - Leave a few pennies by a fountain for anyone to make a wish.

* vending machine - Leave a dollar on a vending machine for the next person.
While I'm Waiting...Summer of Service week 9: the $1 challenge
* surprise! - Leave a dollar in a hidden spot for someone to find.  My friend, Sara, and her kiddos love doing random acts of kindness.  They recently hid dollars in children's books at the library!
I talked with Hope and we are going to try to find ways to bless others every day this week for $1 or less.  This is going to be so much fun!  I can't wait to hear how you were creative with your $1!!!  I hope you and your family enjoy this challenge!

Join me on Instagram and tag your pictures with #soschallenge2015.  I would love to share what you guys are doing!  I love pulling inspiration from projects that others are working on so share, share, share!

I hope you'll join me!

  2. This is probably the best one yet. Although I say that every week. I think because anyone can do this for the cost of it. AND, it gets the little ones involved. I love the library idea and the vending machine idea. Imagine the person who finds it and is blessed. I'm going to have to get some dollar bills and spread some love around! Another great idea Holly!

  3. I'm positive I commented on this post yesterday. Did my comment disappear, or do you have comment moderation and you haven't had time to publish the comments? If you have comment moderation, then I don't care if you never publish the comments. If my comment disappeared, then I'm not happy because Blogger is out to get me.

    Love,
    Janie

    1. I'm so glad you stopped by, Marisa! The vending machine is one of my all time favs - super easy to do!!! And, thank you so much for supporting your local organizations with school supplies. It's so sad to think about how many kiddos go back to school without supplies. But, if we all do a little, a lot can be accomplished!!!

  9. What great ideas! My oldest is just 3, and I've been wondering how I could get him involved with service projects. I'm so glad I was your neighbor on Women With Intention! I know my little guy would think it was so fun to leave surprise money for someone to find! :) Thanks for sharing your ideas with us.

    1. Hi, Kelsey! I'm so glad you stopped by! Yes, serving with little ones can some times be tough. Right now it's more about them seeing what you are doing and the excitement it brings. My 4 year old, Hope, doesn't full get it but she does know that she's bringing happiness to others and she thinks that is super fun! Hope you have a fantastic day!

    1. Yes, ma'am! They have been running sales for the last four weeks and I bet they continue for at least another week of two. This week the penny sales are for box of 10 or 12 pencils, compasses, and rulers. Protractors are only a quarter. They'll post the flyer for next week on their site Saturday evening. Don't forget that Max and Depot are the same store with the same sales so you can double up! :) Can't wait to connect for the Back to School event! SO fun!!!
