My FAVORITE artist - and five ways to display her artwork

There once was a little girl who could not find her groove.  She tried dance, gymnastics, volleyball, soccer, tennis, basketball - you name it, she tried it!  Her parents signed her up for anything (and everything!) they could think of to help her find her "thing".  And while she had fun (most of the time), none of these activities brought her true joy.

In her spare time you could find her creating.  She loved to find what others would consider trash and turn them in to masterpieces.  She would sit at her kitchen table for hours turning pencil shavings into skirts for stick figures.  She would walk to the creek by her house and turn leaves into boats.  While looking at the clouds she would see the most amazing images.  When she would look around, she saw beauty in the simplest objects and was amazed at it all.

And that's where she found her joy - in art!  Every week for the past four years, our 10 year-old daughter, Holden, has been taking art classes.  She is the happiest when I pick her up from art lessons.  I drop her off and when I return, her soul has been filled.  Nothing makes her happier than a blank canvas and knowing that she can create anything her heart desires.

For the past few weeks, she had been telling me that she was working on a surprise for me.  She has been working so hard and I could tell by her art teacher's expression that this one was going to be special.  Holden finished up the painting this past Wednesday and gave it to me when I picked her up.  Tears puddled in my eyes and my proud mama heart pounded in my chest.  I was blown away!  Isn't this beautiful?!

She's painted pictures before that wow-ed me but this one was different.  This was done by a girl confident in the gift that God has given her.  This was painted by the little girl who once was so self-conscious that the thought of performing in front of an audience would leave her crumbled.  This was painted by a little girl that for the longest time couldn't find her "thing".  This was painted by the little girl that is quickly growing up right before our very eyes and we can not wait to see what God has planned for her!  One thing I know for sure - she will color her world with beauty!

I love this quote by Pablo Picasso because it is so true!  Every child is an artist and over the course of their school years, many, many, MANY pieces of art will come home.  The question is, how do you display all these masterpieces?

When you have a budding artist, it's hard for them to see their work in the trash can (gasp!).  While some pieces you know you will hang on to, others were more like rough drafts.  I've found that putting these in a notebook with page protectors makes my little artist happy.  We can save a lot of work and it takes up minimal space.

I found these really inexpensive wooden frames at Michael's and spray painted them to match her room.  The art is held in place with a nail and a small binder clip.  This makes rotating artwork super simple (though I've never changed these - I love to see how far her art work has come since she started).

These frames from Lillian Vernon are a little pricey but I love that you can store up to 50 pieces of art in each frame!  You can hang them either horizontally or vertically so the possibilities are endless.  These are four of the very first pieces of art that Holden brought home from art class!

Holden might not like to perform in front of an audience but she loves when her art is on display!  For those extra special masterpieces, custom framing is always an option.

And, my absolute FAVORITE way to display her art is to hang it from her ceiling!  I can take zero credit for coming up with this - this was all her idea and she LOVES it!  I love to go upstairs to tell her goodnight and find her just staring at her ceiling.  It's like her own little Sistine Chapel!

We use velcro strips to "hang" her artwork from the ceiling.  There's twenty or so canvases hung right now and lots of space for more in the future.

  11. I just have to say that your daughter is AMAZINGLY talented! I love the way you have displayed her art work. I never thought about using the ceiling as a wall gallery either. I find it hard to "trash" some of my children's drawings as well, I have totes for each of them with their artwork and they are stored in our attic for now (until they have their own homes and can take it with them). Thank you for sharing this with us over at Welcome Home Wednesdays Link Party! :)

    1. Thank you so much for hosting and for your kind words! It's been so fun to watch her get better and better! It was her idea to hang her art from the ceiling - I kind of thought it was crazy - till I saw it! Now I can't wait till she finished a painting so that we can add another one to the mix! Hope you're having a great day! Thanks for stopping by!
