I'm currently in week 3 of the Marie Kondo challenge from her book
The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing. One thing I quickly began to realize is how much stuff I have and truly how much stuff I do.not.need!
Remember when I cleaned out my t-shirt drawer and found THIRTY SIX t-shirts crammed in there?! Seems like I wasn't the only one with a t-shirt problem.
AnneMarie recently commented about t-shirts that she had held on to - not wanting to give her cast offs to the homeless shelter but also not wanting to turn them into rags. She asked if I had any suggestions. So...in case you are in the same boat as AnnMarie and myself, here are a few ways that you can upcycle your old t-shirts!
You can use your old t-shirts to make...
*bracelets
*a scarf
*an apron
*custom wall art
*a bag
*boot socks
*a rug
and just because I REALLY loved this one, here's a tutorial on how to make yarn out of
t-shirts:
*a dog toy (or two!)
Do you have a favorite way to upcycle your old t-shirts? Please share in the comments below!

ReplyDeleteCrazy, huh?! People are amazingly talented - I'm just glad they share all these awesome how to's!
DeleteSuch fun ideas! I wish I had some to do some of these with but I love all my t-shirts (I only have four, crazy, right?) xo Amanda
ReplyDeleteOnly four?! Wow! That's impressive! What's your secret?!
DeleteThese are great ideas! Thanks for sharing :)
ReplyDeleteThanks, Michelle! Happy to share!
DeleteI love the idea of using them as wall art and I don't know if my way is officially upcycling but I used my daughters, and mine, to make us all t-shirt quilts! No, I am not THAT talented ( I wish! ) but I used a company ..... www.campusquilts.com they are amazing and gorgeous and my girls love them! I made them each huge quilts that included t-shirts from grade school thru college years. Mine is a mix of their high school water polo days and their college sororities and my favorite university (We Are!) so its not cheap but the pay off is wonderful and the heirloom we created is ever lasting for them to share with their children someday! Have a fabulous Thursday! Still have not read the book. Still living thru my kitchen remodel! LOL soon I hope! :)
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely! T-shirt quilts are an awesome idea for old t-shirts. Funny that you mentioned it since I just sent a bag of them with my husband to give to a lady at work that quilts! They are Holden's shirts from birth to age 5. Can't wait to see what she comes up with!
DeleteAnd, the book will be there - maybe it can be your reward for making it through the remodel!
Holly, thank you!!!!! These ideas are so good and creative! Usually when I find t-shirt DIY projects, they are all bags. Nothing against bags, but I have lots of those-I really like how, in addition to a bag, you give ideas like rugs, boot socks, wall art and aprons-I've never thought of doing any of this kind of stuff, and it sounds awesome! Now I'm wishing that I had more raggedy t-shirts to work with haha. Seriously, this is great. Thank you!! :)
ReplyDeleteYou are so very welcome! Thanks for the idea!
DeleteWhat a great collection of ideas. I love upcycling tshirts. We always seem to have lots of extra. I really want to try turning them into yarn. I just need to think of something good to make with tshirt yarn.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Rebecca! There are some great tutorials on baskets and rugs using t-shirt yard. Once I get my house all in order, I think this will be one of my first projects to try! It looks so fun! Thanks so much for stopping by! Hope you have an extraordinary weekend!
DeleteSuch fun ideas, I have a ton of t shirts and I will have to try some of these!

Amazing - and also sad! I have felt so many emotions by realizing how much stuff was weighing me down. Really am enjoying getting it all out! My son was cleaning out and came across a t-shirt that he loves but doesn't wear anymore. We are going to try out the canvas craft! Thanks so much for hosting!
DeleteSuch great ideas! I'm especially liking the wall art and aprons! And with the wall art, you can still enjoy the shirt, even if it doesn't quite fit right anymore. :)
ReplyDeleteI think I'm about to try out the wall art! My son brought me a shirt that he loves that he no longer wears! Crossing my fingers it turns out ok! Thanks so much for stopping by!
DeleteThese are all wonderful ideas! I have a few shirts saved for crafts- a few of the babies' old shirts I can't part with- I've still haven't done those DIYs yet. Thanks for the reminder and sharing with us at Mommy Monday!
ReplyDeleteXOXO
