My One Little Word for 2016

My One Little Word for 2016
The first Monday of 2016...ah, the possibilities!  I took a little blogger break over the holidays and am so excited to be back!  I have so many things I want to share with you in the coming days, weeks, and months!  But, before I do, I wanted to kick things off by sharing my mantra for 2016.

In years past, I remember making resolutions.  I didn't make a big deal out of them, but I went in to the year with all these grand plans and never, ever did I make it till the end of January.  Last year I finally ditched the resolutions and jumped on the #olw bandwagon. My word for 2015 was "Shine."  My motivating verse was Matthew 5:14-16 (I like The Message version best):

“Here’s another way to put it: You’re here to be light, bringing out the God-colors in the world. God is not a secret to be kept. We’re going public with this, as public as a city on a hill. If I make you light-bearers, you don’t think I’m going to hide you under a bucket, do you? I’m putting you on a light stand. Now that I’ve put you there on a hilltop, on a light stand—shine! Keep open house; be generous with your lives. By opening up to others, you’ll prompt people to open up with God, this generous Father in heaven."

Be a light.  Be open.  Be generous. Yes!!!  That's what I wanted to focus on in 2015.  There were days were my light shone brighter than others but having that one little word as a reminder was good for my soul.

Choosing a one little word for 2016 proved to be difficult!  Many words popped up as I was thinking/praying about it but none seemed right.  Some of the words that were possibilities included Perspective, Gratitude, Intentional, and Make.  I strive for all those things but I was looking for something else.  And, then, day by day, the same word kept creeping up and showing itself to me...

And, my one little word for 2016 is...
My One Little Word for 2016 - extraordinary
Extraordinary...beyond what is usual, ordinary, regular, or established.  And, while all that sounded great, what I'm really looking to become in 2016 is extra ordinary (so, I guess it's really two little words!).  For the longest time, I have ached, wanted, needed to be more. More of a somebody.  A better version of me.  And while trying to achieve this I lost something.  I lost me.  Hi, my name is Holly and I'm ordinary.  I love casual living, being a homebody, not wearing make-up, eating take out (because I stink at cooking), but I love the heck out of my family and friends.  And, you know what?!  That's OK!  Goals, dreams, and aspirations are wonderful things but they mean absolutely nothing if they aren't who you really are.  I could get down and out thinking about all the time I've wasted trying to be a different version of who I really am, who others thought I was, or even who they wanted me to be.  But, I feel like God is using these moments to show me that His way will always be better than anything I can dream up!

I love the way The Message always speaks to me!  Here's my motivating verse for 2016:

So here’s what I want you to do, God helping you: Take your everyday, ordinary life—your sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking-around life—and place it before God as an offering. Embracing what God does for you is the best thing you can do for him. Don’t become so well-adjusted to your culture that you fit into it without even thinking. Instead, fix your attention on God. You’ll be changed from the inside out. Readily recognize what he wants from you, and quickly respond to it. Unlike the culture around you, always dragging you down to its level of immaturity, God brings the best out of you, develops well-formed maturity in you.  Romans 12:1-2

YES to all of that!!!  So, how am I going to implement my one little word into my year?  I've taken a few of the top New Year's Resolutions that people make and added a little extra ordinary to them!

*Weight Loss and Health - Being in shape and taking care of your body is super important. While working out is not my favorite way to spend my time, I'm learning that the older you get the harder it is to maintain what you had.  I had been working out with a trainer a few times a week (which I absolutely LOVED) but a few things popped up and I needed to trim expenses and, sadly, that was one of the things that needed to be put on the back burner for a bit.  So, how can I take care of myself in an extra ordinary way?  I'll be hitting the pavement of my neighborhood with a smile on my face (and hopefully not looking like Phoebe from Friends running through Central Park!).  Walking/jogging in my neighborhood might not be the most exciting workout but it's better than not working out at all!
My One Little Word for 2016 - extraordinary
*Get Organized - We have too.much.stuff.  Plain and simple.  A week or so before the end of the year, a few friends organized a Facebook support group for anyone wanting to read and implement The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing by Marie Kondo.  This book had been on my radar but it just seemed overwhelming.  Having a group of girls to support and encourage me along the way sounded amazing!  It's a 26 week challenge and I'll be sharing my progress with you guys along the way!  I want to embrace our ordinary home with a little extra love and joy!
My One Little Word for 2016 - extraordinary
*Enjoy Life to the Fullest - I want to truly appreciate the every day.  The mundane.  The day in and day out.  The ordinary.  And, I want to see all the little extras along the way!
My One Little Word for 2016 - extraordinary
Failure is not an option!  Why?  Because the only difference between ordinary and extraordinary is just a little extra!  Here's to a wonderful New Year with lots of little extras!

Gig 'em and God bless!
Holly

  1. I love this! I already think you are extra ordinary by all the things you do for others. I love your perspective on everything and I love The Message and the verse. If you can't tell I love this post as a whole. I do feel that we try so hard to be this and that, that we do stop being ourselves and I think it's a great reminder to have that we should be our true self. Anyway now that I've preached Happy New Year see you Wednesday.

    1. Thank you, JulieAnn! It really was hard for me to settle on a word and when extraordinary first came to mind I thought, "nah, that's not it" but it was crazy how many times it popped up over the course of a few days! Love when God gives us little winks! Looking forward to seeing you back on Wednesday!

  4. Adding the touches on my post for my word this year...will come out on Thankful Friday this week. So in the meantime, I love your word. As for brisk walking, I've been doing it as my choice of exercise, since I am not a gym person. I've been walking for many, many years. It is my prayer time, my exercise time, my me time and my fresh air time. All those combined make me an "extraordinary" person. HAHAHAHA.... It will you too. It gets easier to do the more you commit. I'll cheer you on my friend.

  5. Amen, sister! I feel like I could have written that paragraph about feeling "ordinary." It has taken me awhile to be ok with that. Now I realize that the things I think of as ordinary (making a cozy home, loving my family, showing hospitality) are also gifts and talents that God has given me. Love your verses from the Message too. Happy New Year! I missed your blog posts over the holidays!

  9. Very nice Holly. I just recently learned about this trend of choosing a word for the year. I'm not sure if it just started, is just growing in popularity, or if I've just been clueless. I like your words for last year and this one. I feel it's going to be an awesome year for you! This will be my first year choosing a word: Joy

    1. Thank you so much, Angela! To be honest, last year was the first time I had heard (or paid attention!) to it! I loved the simplicity of it and I'm a huge fan of mottos/mantras! I love your word too! In working through the tidying method I mentioned in my post, you goal is for everything in your home to bring you joy. What a fabulous feeling - to be surrounded by nothing but joy! Thank you so much for stopping by! I hope you have a fabulous day!

  14. I love your word! I too choose a word each year (as difficult as narrowing down that one word is). I can so relate with "For the longest time, I have ached, wanted, needed to be more. More of a somebody. A better version of me. And while trying to achieve this I lost something. I lost me." My word for 2016 is "Future." The future in 2016 means so much, but it's also a year of reclaiming me and your words were spot.on. Here's to an incredible year!

  18. I'm seeing more & more of these one word resolutions. The only thing that I could think for myself was "relax" but I know that will be a tad bit difficult for me to accomplish cuz I'm a total anxiety girl. Ha!

    1. I totally understand, Mandie! I struggle with anxiety too. But, I totally think you could "relax". Something about making it your one little word keeps it at the front of your thoughts. It's just one little word but it makes such a big difference! I know you can do it! :)
