while I waited...week 1

It's a new year!  A new chance to try something new!  My one little word for 2016 is extraordinary - well, more like extra ordinary.  As a way of keeping my one little word in focus (and to keep me accountable!), I wanted to share pieces of our life.  The ordinary, not always Instagram worthy moments that I don't want to forget.  (thank you, Shelly for the inspiration for weekly recaps!)  I'm hoping to do a weekly post to recap what I did while I waited.  Would love for you to join me as I share our extra ordinary life!  And, don't be surprised if you see lots of Maggie, our dog, and Mini, our cat - sometimes they are the only cooperative family members! :)

I'm cheating just a bit as I start by going back to the last day of 2015.  It was my birthday so I felt like that was ok. :)
While I'm Waiting...While I Waited...week 1 - Eilan Hotel & Spa
This is where I woke up for my birthday!  Not too shabby, huh?  It's the Eilan Hotel & Spa in San Antonio.  Absolutely gorgeous hotel and the staff was second to none!  I would definitely recommend if you are going to visit San Antonio.

Mimosas and pancakes for breakfast!  They let me order off the kid's menu - I had no idea my stack of pancakes was going to come out shaped like a puppy!  Too cute!
While I'm Waiting...While I Waited...week 1
Shelly and I were in San Antonio to attend the funeral of one of our dear friend's father who passed away on Christmas Day.  Our hubbies had to work this day but drove in and met us at the JW Marriott to spend the next couple of days.
While I'm Waiting...While I Waited...week 1 - JW Marriott San Antonio
This is a very large property but we were excited to be staying on the same floor and just a few doors down from each other.  This is the view from our room.  The trees were still decorated for Christmas with blinking lights - it was so pretty at night!
While I'm Waiting...While I Waited...week 1
We made a quick run to Target for snacks!  This was great to have on hand since I made reservations for us for 8pm - at a restaurant in Indianapolis!  Ugh - you can't take me anywhere! :)
While I'm Waiting...While I Waited...week 1
Loved spending my birthday with my favorite people!
While I'm Waiting...While I Waited...week 1
We tried (and tried and tried!) to take a picture using my phone's remote...I literally was crying in this picture.  Our guys are worse than children!

We made it till midnight and were able to sleep late the following morning (whoo hoo!  that's the BEST way to start a new year!).  We met Keith and Shelly downstairs for breakfast and then had the guys drop us off at the mall for a few returns (and a little shopping!).

ring | bracelet | tanks thanks to a birthday gift card from my in laws!
While I'm Waiting...While I Waited...week 1
We took the guys back to Tiago's Cabo Grille where we had eaten a few days before.  We are creatures of habit so when we find something we like, we like to take full advantage!
While I'm Waiting...While I Waited...week 1
Later that afternoon we went to see a movie.  No, not the Chipmunks - this photo was purely to send to Hope!  We saw Daddy's Home.
We took full advantage of having no children and spent the rest of the night hanging out and watching college football!  #ordinary #justthewayIlikeit
While I'm Waiting...While I Waited...week 1
On January 2nd, we slept late again, had a late breakfast, and then checked out of our hotel.  Road tripping with this guy is my favorite!  I would go anywhere with him!
While I'm Waiting...While I Waited...week 1
I convinced Mike to drive 30 minutes in the opposite direction of home so that we could check out the Farmer's Market at the Pearl Brewery.  This would have been lots of fun had it not been freezing and raining!  This isn't a bad picture - it was just that gray outside.
While I'm Waiting...While I Waited...week 1
Lemons to lemonade, right?!  As we were walking we saw this little deli.  We went in because we were freezing - and, boy, am I glad we did!  Everything looked amazing!
While I'm Waiting...While I Waited...week 1
Anyone that knows me knows I have a sweet tooth but I passed up all those yummy treats for a bowl of tomato soup and cheese toast.  Oh.my.goodness!  If you are ever in the area, go eat at Bakery Lorraine!!!  We are going back to San Antonio this weekend and I'm trying to figure out how I can eat there again!!!
While I'm Waiting...While I Waited...week 1
We made the three hour trip home and this was the best part of the day!  Having a few days to recharge and renew is great but being reunited as a #partyoffive is what my heart lives for!
While I'm Waiting...While I Waited...week 1
Sunday morning we got up to go to church and Holden came downstairs wearing the same shoes as me!  Too funny!

Hi, my name is Holly and I like to take funny pictures of my cat yawning! #crazycatlady
While I'm Waiting...While I Waited...week 1
This is Mini.  She's our rescue kitty that we've had for about about three months.  I never (ever!) thought that we would have a cat but she has worked her way right in to my heart.  Sunday afternoons are for snuggling!
While I'm Waiting...While I Waited...week 1
Later that evening we met my parents for dinner.  Without knowing it, Holden and I had matching shoes on AGAIN!
While I'm Waiting...While I Waited...week 1
After dinner we went to Target were I scored 75 sq. foot rolls of wrapping paper for .75 each!  Already thinking ahead for teacher gifts next Christmas!  :)
While I'm Waiting...While I Waited...week 1
Monday was the last day of our Christmas break.  Mini and Maggie soaked up the sun like it was their job!
While I'm Waiting...While I Waited...week 1
Hope decided to tell Santa on December 23rd that she wanted a "cooking machine" and well, the North Pole must have underestimated how many children wanted this particular item.  Thankfully, we found one from the previous night's trip to Target.  To say she was excited is an understatement!
While I'm Waiting...While I Waited...week 1
Cookie success (and they were tasty too!)!
While I'm Waiting...While I Waited...week 1
One way I'm learning to embrace ordinary is to learn to love what I have (and if I don't love it, to get rid of it).  I recently finished the book The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing by Marie Kondo and am now tackling the first challenge - my clothes.  These drawers are normally closed but I was taking my before picture. :)
While I'm Waiting...While I Waited...week 1
holy.smokes - 36 t-shirts in one drawer.  No wonder I couldn't open it all the way! #embarrassing
While I'm Waiting...While I Waited...week 1
Progress!!!  I'm hoping to blog through the 26 week challenge - would love to have you follow my journey (and offer encouragement when I'm ready to quit!).  Come back tomorrow to see all of Week 1's progress!  To say I'm hooked on this method is an understand!
While I'm Waiting...While I Waited...week 1
What's my family up to while I'm knee deep in old t-shirts?  They put in another Star Wars movie!  And, yes, I still have my Christmas decorations up.  #ugh #morefuntoputupthantakedown
While I'm Waiting...While I Waited...week 1
Tuesday all the kiddos went back to school.  I think they were secretly excited about going back and getting into a routine again!
Tuesdays are our big extra-circular days.  I drop off Holden at art lessons then take Hope to tap/ballet class.  She was showing off the sticker she received in class.
While I'm Waiting...While I Waited...week 1
She loves to watch the big girls dance!
While I'm Waiting...While I Waited...week 1
We left dance in time to swing by and pick up Holden from art.  She has been working on this painting for the past 3 or 4 sessions.  Her art teacher is amazing - Holden has come so far and learned so much! #artisherlovelanguage
While I'm Waiting...While I Waited...week 1
We arrive home just in time to chat with Colby and Mike for a few minutes before Colby went to Scouts and then to Wrangler practice.  Colby is on a Country and Western dance team and absolutely loves it!
 While I'm Waiting...While I Waited...week 1
Couldn't help but capture these two cuties on Wednesday morning!  And, why yes, that is my Christmas tree STILL up in the background! ;)
While I'm Waiting...While I Waited...week 1
I received this fun picture from Hope's teacher later that morning.  She's in Kindergarten and the top line was from September and the second line shows how much she has improved in such a short time period!  She's an August baby so she will repeat Kindergarten at public school next year.  I think this "bonus" year will benefit her greatly!
While I'm Waiting...While I Waited...week 1
I met Kim for lunch and we shared yummy cupcakes for dessert - just because!  We talked holidays, kids, puberty, blogging - you name it!  Needless to say, it was a long lunch filled with lots of laughs!  If you haven't checked out Hunt and Host, you should! While I'm Waiting...While I Waited...week 1
Colby had a basketball game on Thursday.  Ever wonder what little sisters think of all the action?!
While I'm Waiting...While I Waited...week 1
Sweet sisters!  And, yes, three of them are wearing versions of the same outfit!  Too funny!
While I'm Waiting...While I Waited...week 1
I stayed to work the concession stand after Colby's game while Mike took Holden to her basketball practice.  No complaints here - that meant I got to have dinner with this guy.  Mental note: always scout out where the tvs are located!  It was right above my head so I didn't get much conversation with my dinner!
While I'm Waiting...While I Waited...week 1
And this is what he did when he caught me taking his pic!  That would be a chicken finger blocking my shot!
While I'm Waiting...While I Waited...week 1 easy teacher gift
Remember when I went on and on and on last summer about the good deals at OfficeMax for back-to-school?  I stockpiled a few things that I knew teachers would need at the beginning of the new semester and put together a little happy for them (to celebrate making it through the first week back!).  Each box contained 24 Expo markers - bonus?!  Each box only cost me $2 total to put together!

I spent the rest of the day getting all of our Christmas decoration ready to box up.  I was absolutely dreading it but it went way better than expected!  Before/after pictures coming soon!
While I'm Waiting...While I Waited...week 1
I was joined in bed about 1:45 am by this smiling cutie.  A crazy thunderstorm blew through and the "boom, boom, booms" woke her up.  Snuggles and the Disney channel had her back to sleep in no time!
While I'm Waiting...While I Waited...week 1
Holden had her first basketball game bright and early yesterday morning.  She scored half of her team's points - sadly, they were the Visitors...  But, it didn't matter to her - she was PUMPED about scoring and ready for her next game!  Way to go, Holden!
While I'm Waiting...While I Waited...week 1
This morning after church, I realized how much Colby is growing (and how we need to work on chivalry!).  His preference is the front seat so that meant I was in the backseat with the girls!
While I'm Waiting...While I Waited...week 1
We had a few returns to make at the mall so while Colby and I ran to do those, the girls took Mike to Justice, because "Daddy!".  This isn't the best picture of Mike but I thought he looked so cute carrying the Justice bag!
While I'm Waiting...While I Waited...week 1
They could look at tennis shoes all day!
While I'm Waiting...While I Waited...week 1
"Daddy, carry me" slays him every.time!
What is that smile all about?!  She's decided she's writing a book!  Cover created, table of contents in the works and she completed work on the first chapter.  #sheneverceasestoamazeme
While I'm Waiting...While I Waited...week 1
And the boys wrapped up our week with some driveway hoops!  And, much to Colby's dismay, Mike beat him!  Oh, those boys are SO competitive!

I can't believe you made it through the whole post!  Bless your heart!  I can assure you that most weeks will not be this full!  :)  Oh, and sorry for the sometimes pitiful pictures.  These are snapshots of our ordinary life and, well, ordinary is best captured on my phone!  :)

I'm glad you stopped by!  Hope you have an extraordinary week!

Gig 'em and God bless!

  4. Oh my gosh I love this so much and so glad you decided to jump in! I seriously had to cover my mouth to keep from laughing too hard remembering our NYE picture taking fiasco. I am painfully aware that I have missed far too many of your IG pics and totally didn't even know about y'alls side trip on the way from SA!! What has it come to that I have to get my fix from your blog and social media??!! Let's fix it soon!

  8. I am glad you jumped on the bandwagon! i love shelly's weekly posts! I live vicariously thru all of you with your kids. You know mine are grown so how boring would my posts be. HAHAHA. Ok question about that book: is it really good? Would you recommend buying? It must be popular because I went to request it from our library and holy smokes I was #158 on the list! WHOA no way. So do I want to spend $10 for the kindle ebook? Yes????? Thanks for your input! :)

    1. Thanks, Kim! I think it will be a fun way to remember the everyday ordinary moments that go on around here! I love Shelly's too! Crazy thing is - some week's it might be the only way I see her! :/ We live so close but since our kids don't go to the same school, it can be weeks before we cross paths! And, I'm pretty sure your posts would be more exciting than you think! I'm not kidding when I say some weeks might be full of Maggie and Mini! :)

The book - 100% YES! It gets a little wonky and some of the things she says you're like, "really?" but if you dive in and really try to implement her method, you see results and you see results FAST! I would absolutely recommend. I bought the Kindle version. Let me know if you have any questions - happy to help!

Thanks for stopping by! Have an extraordinary day!
