Tweens and traveling - a winning combination!

Tweens - the fun age range of kiddos aged 10-12 (give or take a few years).  They aren't young children but they aren't quite teens either.  It's actually a fun in between age where they still like to be silly and their moms aren't a total embarrassment {yet!}.  They are just learning to be comfortable in their own skin and they can be lots of fun!  Shelly and I recently took Holden and Carly on a road trip to Fort Worth to celebrate Holden's 11th birthday.  While there, I learned some valuable tips on traveling with tweens!

While I'm Waiting...10 tips for traveling with tweens

1.  Stop and smell the roses.

or in our case, the bluebonnets!

When traveling with tweens, be prepared to stop at a moments notice!  As we were driving to Fort Worth, we saw this great patch of bluebonnets on the side of the road so we pulled over and had the girls jump out for a quick pic (or two!).  Your destination might be amazing but don't forget to enjoy the journey!

2.  Break a few rules.
If I were to pick which tip would be Holden and Carly's most favorite, it would probably be this one!  We didn't let the girls go crazy wild but we did look the other way a time or two in the name of fun!

*we didn't actually let them climb - but they had fun staging this photo!

jumping on the bed in a hotel is totally acceptable! ;)

3.  Do something you haven't done before.
It's always fun to do something out of the ordinary.  Tweens love a good surprise and we were happy to oblige with a trip to a drive-in movie!  It was a little chilly outside but they had a blast destroying my car eating popcorn and watching Zootopia!

4.  Act silly!

5.  Wear matching shirts!

Shelly hit a home run when she found these shirts!

We couldn't resist joining in on the fun too!

6.  CELEBRATE!
Traveling AND celebrating?  Yes, please!  I called the hotel beforehand and told them it was Holden's birthday.  They obliged and had cake waiting in our room when we checked in!  Holden's day was MADE!!!

It's also easy to surprise someone with a message on your hotel window!  It was fun seeing her expression when we opened the windows on her birthday!

a simple birthday banner and a couple of suction cups - it's truly the little things!

7.  Conquer fears.
Fort Worth has these beautiful water gardens in the downtown area.  While the stairs of this particular water feature are made to be walked down, the cascading water plays tricks on your eyes making it a little wonky to go down.  Holden was so fearful at first but having Carly there gave her the confidence that she could do it.  It was so fun seeing her conquer a fear!

At first Holden was scooting down on her rear end!

But then she stood up!

Look at that face (and that sweet BFF cheering her on!)!

8.  Pay attention to the little things.

I thought I had struck out with the butterfly exhibit but once they were finally able to hold a butterfly, they were SO in to it!

I love this picture of them admiring this beautiful butterfly.

And, I really wish I had pictures (#bloggerfail) but truly one of Holden's most favorite things to do was to get off the elevator on the second floor and ride the escalator down to meet us on the first floor.  Little things!  It's truly the little things!

9.  Have impromptu photo shoots!
Always have a camera ready!  You never know where the mood is going to strike them (and usually it's not where you had planned!).

They had so much fun giving Shelly all kinds of silly poses.  I was just waiting on one of them to fall in!  Thankfully, everyone stayed dry!

10.  Have fun wherever you go!

These two...  They are an absolute joy to be around.  Granted, Holden drove me crazy only wanting to eat Whataburger and thinking that slides and socks was appropriate footwear but they really, really know how to have fun!  They crack each other up yet keep each other in check.  They truly love each other and are the textbook definition of besties for the restie!  I'm looking forward to lots and lots of road trips in our future!  Come back in a few years and I'll give you the run down on tips for traveling with TEENS!  #yikes

    1. Emily, it's just the best! Shelly and I step back and laugh {a lot!} when we are with them - they are miniature versions of ourselves and it's just so darn funny! But, they know how to have WAY more fun than me!!! Thanks so much for stopping by! Hope you're having a super week!

  7. How fun! I have to admit that my tween boy is just too serious to enjoy much of this though. I loved looking at all your pictures though! It looks like lots of fun was had by all.

    1. Ah man! That's a bummer! He's probably in that in-between age - really wanting to act like a kid but wanting to be a big kid too! It's hard!
