Why I'm ok with my son playing Pokemon Go

What's the big deal about Pokemon Go?!
Are your kids crazy about Pokemon Go?  Heck, I know a couple of moms who are hooked!  Exactly what IS Pokemon Go you might ask?  Well, according to my go-to dictionary, Wikipedia describes it as follows:

Pokemon Go is a free-to-play location-based augmented reality mobile game, developed by Niantic and published by The Pokemon Company as part of the Pokemon franchise.  It was released worldwide in July 2016 for iOS and Android devices.

The game allows players to capture, battle, and train virtual Pokemon who appear throughout the real world.  It makes use of GPS and the camera of compatible devices.

So, what do I know about Pokemon Go?  Absolutely nothing except for one thing...if you want HOURS of time with your teen son, get him to download it immediately (I'm guessing he probably already has it downloaded!).

This app has only been out for barely a week but it dominates the conversation between Colby and I.  Anytime I get in the car, he wants to know if he can come.  I don't care if he's searching out tiny virtual Pokemon, he's in the car with ME!  It's time we have together and that time is hard to come by!  I'll drive him all over Bryan/College Station if he wants me to!
What's the big deal about Pokemon Go?!
Yesterday I needed to make a trip into downtown Bryan.  Colby had heard this was a hotspot of Pokemon activity so he came along for the drive.  We drove up and down countless streets all while he captured and told me all about these little critters.  I wish I could say I had a clue what he was talking about but I don't.  All I know is that I enjoyed having him with me!
Tuesday evening I saw this post on Instagram and knew that he would want to go!
What's the big deal about Pokemon Go?!
Little did I realize how many other people would be there!  It was crazy!  All these young people playing a virtual scavenger hunt but having so much fun together!

We were allowed onto Kyle Field in hopes of finding the elusive Hitmonlee.  Sadly, Colby never found it but we still had a great time!

After we left Kyle Field, we continued to drive around campus and catch a few more Pokemon.  I would guess we spent a couple of hours together - laughing, talking, and him trying to convince me I should play too.
What's the big deal about Pokemon Go?!
I still don't know what the big deal about Pokemon Go is but I can tell you this - any extra time I can get with this kid is always time well spent.  Thank you, Pokemon Go!

Are your kids hooked on this new app?  Surely I'm not the only Pokemon chauffeur mom out there, right?!

Hope you have a super day!

Gig 'em and God bless!

  1. I love this!! It's actually funny, my 27 yr old husband is obsessed, so I downloaded it too! We went on a CRAZY long walk the other night and had some of the best conversation ever! Technology doesn't have to be ALL bad! You're so right!

    1. Like so many other things, I think it's all about perspective. I'll admit, at first I thought it was SO silly but then I realized I could actually show interest in something he liked and the benefits were definitely to my advantage! You guys have fun!!!

    1. Hi, Ana! So glad you found me! I definitely agree! It gets harder the older they get but I it's definitely worth finding the time - even if we are searching for virtual Pokemons! :)

  3. This just cracks me up! No,, I don't do Pokemon GO and I laugh when I see people walking around with their heads down and swiping. Yesterday I had a friend who was a stop sign and 2 teens ran into her car on their bikes because heads were down and trying to catch a character! What! LOL.......its crazy but I guess in our world now, nothing amazes me anymore. enjoy all the time you can with your boy! Soon he will be off to college and it goes by in a blink!

    1. Isn't it so funny?! All these people running around with their heads in their phones - but that's really not any different than any other day... That's crazy about the teens and your friend! We actually had a car accident on campus the other night. A person got out of their car to go catch a Pokemon and left his car in the middle of the road! Another car came up on it and ran into it! Craziness! But, like you said, hardly anything fazes me anymore! I'll just sit back and enjoy my time with Colby! Hopefully no one runs in to us!

  4. If my son would ride in the car with me, I'd drive him anywhere he wanted to go also! Have fun while it lasts. You are making memories that won't soon be forgotten.

    1. When I finally realized I could get him to willingly spend time with me, I was ready to drive him anywhere he wanted me to go! Thank you, Pokemon!

  5. At least you are with him during the hunt. I am just learning about this new game. It is all over our local news about being careful because a few people have been robbed in our city due to this game. They lure them to the destinations and slugs are using it to attack people. I know, Debbie Downer here, but that is the extent I know of this game.

    1. Oh, absolutely! I forward him all those crazy articles! He and a friend wanted to go searching the other day and I didn't have a good feeling about it. I told him I would drive them all over the place if they wanted me to! Definitely safety first!

  6. My son is too young to play (he's less than 2), but my husband and I are hooked. You should play, it's a lot of fun. ;)

  9. My 22 yoa daughter and 18 yoa son both play Pokemon Go. While there are cons to the game, I think it's largely a positive thing and I'm all for it too.
